Orientation sessions

We have two formal orientation sessions for our Kindergarten children, and one informal gathering:

The first formal session will be on Wednesday, 13 November and the second will be on Wednesday, 27 November. Children will spend the morning in the kindergarten classroom together, with one of our teachers.

We will also have an informal afternoon gathering on Wednesday, 20 November.

Parents and carers are encouraged to stay for the information session on 13 November, to learn about starting school at Katoomba Public School.

Connect Starting School playgroup

Connect Family Services run a transition to school playgroup each Wednesday morning of term, in one of our Kindergarten classrooms.

Children who are starting school in 2025, and their families, are invited to come along. Children will have the opportunity to get used to the school environment, meet other children who they will be starting school with and meet some of the teachers.

Please bring a hat, a water bottle and a fruit snack in a lunch box that your child can open.

Starting "Big School" is a milestone in every child’s life and, at Katoomba Public School, we aim to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible for students and parents. A big part of this transition is our Starting School Buddy Program.

Our senior students are invited to apply for the very important role of Kindergarten Buddy. They support your child as they meet their teacher, engage in some "Big School" activities, familiarise themselves with the school  environment and act as a support and friend to them on orientation days, the start of the 2025 school year and throughout their kindergarten year.

Our Uniform Shop is open each Wednesday morning from 8.45am, or you can order and pay online for uniforms.

Information about the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment.

Best Start Kindergarten Assessments at Katoomba Public School usually take place in early 2025, before your child's first day of school. You will be notified of the time and day of your child's assessment in the Welcome Pack you receive at your first orientation session, or by mail.

Children will attend the Best Start sessions in small groups with their parents or carers, and will have a chance to play and connect with other children. During the session, the Kindergarten teacher or one of our Assistant Principals will take each child individually for their assessment.

You will receive the results of the assessment within a few weeks after they start school.

Daisy's First Day The Department of Education has produced a special picture book for parents and carers to support their child's transition to primary school. Follow Daisy the koala as she embarks on her exciting first day.

Starting primary school Children who have a positive start to school are likely to engage and experience ongoing academic and social success. The Department of Education offers useful information regarding starting school and has some helpful information to assist your child's orientation and smooth transition to Kindergarten in 2025.
